I'm having problems with Numbering. I want to number a paper I'm writing in a specific way but it does not work. I've checked Help and loolked at 'Bullets and Numbering' and the Outline Numbered tab and 'Customize'. I have created a specific style and done the modifications in the Style box but I get all sorts of results. Here is what I want:

1. [Tab] A Para Heading [underlined]. Text
Line
[Tab]a.[Tab]Sub Para Heading[underlined]. Text
Line
(1)[Tab]Sub Sub Para Heading[underlined]. Text.

etc

1. I hope to have this sort of effect:

a. Assuming that the format is not corrupted in the transmission.

b. Because we in the UK are sticklers for:

(1) Our ability to do things the proper way.

(2) And ask international colleagues for assistance

2. If you can help me I'd be very grateful.

Hi Alan

You need to set up a paragraph style for each level of your numbered list.
There are some tricks to this, which are explained in detail in
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

That page describes the process for built-in headings. The principles are
the same for list styles, but if you have several such lists and so need
your numbering to restart at 1 from time to time you will also need a decide
on a method to do that. See
http://www.syntagma.demon.co.uk/FAQs/ListRestartMethods.htm

This is absolutely doable and quite ordinary. See
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html and note
that all indents and tabs that define the position of numbers and text on
the left (this does not include any right indent) must be set in the
Numbering dialog, as those settings will override anything you set in Format
| Paragraph.
