Numbers and Bullets button error

Why I try to use the numbers or bullets button it causes an error and closes
word. How can I make word allow me to use this feature again?

Whenever I try to insert the numbers or bullets into my MS Word 2003 document it causes an error and closes
word and goes into recovery mode. Also, when I do insert the bullets, the Table of content is affected.

Another issue and possibiliy unrelated, I noticed that I am ocassionally asked my the MS Word 2003 software to create a normal.dot template. I typically closed the application and removed all normal.dot version with the assumption that whenver I reopen the application it will automatically create a new normal.dot.

Exit Word. In the registry, delete the List Gallery Presets key.
