Numbers appear as #Num! on a linked Excel spreadsheet in Access

I have a linked Excel spreadsheet in Access and one of the columns contains
both alpha and numeric characters. In this column, the numbers appear as
#Num! vice the actual number. I went out to the spreadsheet and formatted the
column as 'general' and refreshed the link, to no avail. I tried the same
thing using a 'text' format which also did not work. BTW, other columns that
contain entirely numerics, but are formatted as text on the spreadsheet, show
up as as they should in the linked table. It seems that only the column that
contains both numbers and alphas are a problem. I don't have this problem
when I import vice linking, but I do not want to import this file because it
changes almost daily and a link would work much better. I need a solution.
Thanks in advance for your help.
