Numbers not appearing in document but in TOC - ??

I'm using Word 2002 and have successfully linked my
headings via the Outline Numbering directions for many
documents but am stumped on this problem: Even though the
TOC is showing the title of the heading, the number
(5.1.4.1.2) within the document does not appear. When I
click on the heading, the style is correct, indicating it
is the Heading 5 Style. I encountered this issue earlier
in the same document so I hit Ctrl + spacebar and Ctrl +
Q, then cleared the format which changed it to Normal,
saved the changes and closed the document. When I went
back in I applied the Style and it worked OK. However,
this time that method is not working.
