Numbers not recognised

Excel 98 for Mac has a 95 spreadsheet open but the cells
with numbers in aren't recognised as numbers until you
double click in them then press enter. Unfortunately there
are hundreds and hundreds of numbers so I'm wondering if
there's a faster way of achieving this transformation.

Copy an empty cell, select the range of data that is bad, then do Edit / Paste Special / Add.
This should coerce the data back to numeric.
