Object Palette Crashes

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC

A few weeks ago I had a number of replies to this problem, but no solution--some work arounds, but no fix--just checking in to see if there any progress on a solution. My object palette crashes Word & Powerpoint when I click on the "camera" icon, but only if there is a .mov file the folder I am accessing. It happens in Finder & iPhoto.

.... And I for one still don't know what else to suggest:-(

I've played around with this [in Leopard] without being able to reproduce
the problem. QT files insert & play with no incident regardless of .doc or
..docx files and without regard for what folder of .mov files I navigate to.

It could a related QT issue, since Office relies on it to play .mov files.
If you aren't updated to QT 7.5 as well as fully updated for Office & OS X
you might it may make a difference as well as a possible permissions issue.

Still no clue. I don't think I was fully updated at the time--but now I am.

Word 12.1.1, OS 10.4.11, PPC , and seeing no problem viewing .mov files
in the Object Palette (from iPhoto, not checking from Finder). I think
the main difference with your setup is that I am using iPhoto 08 and you
are using iPhoto 06, but I *really* don't think that is the issue,
especially since Word 2008 was designed against iPhoto 06, as 08 came
out late in the Word development cycle.

Hmm...when I opened a Finder folder of .avi files and then attempted to
switch back to the iPhoto Library in the list of options (where a Movies
folder of .mov files might have been active), Word did crash,
repeatedly. But I was able to get back to my iPhoto Library by choosing
another Library, though, and still no problem with loading an album full
of .mov files, tried several different albums.

Wild guess--the Object Palette has a separate prefs file, which I just
remembered, at username/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.mcp.plist .
Quit all Office apps, drag that to the desktop, and see if the situation
improves on relaunch.

Hi Bob & Daiya,
Regarding updates I am updated as I can be on QT, Office, OSX Tiger, etc. I tried moving the file Daiya suggested (com.microsoft.mcp.plist)to the desktop as prescribed to the desktop. When I tried to access movies in Finder or iPhoto Word crashed. It is a minor annoyance since I work mainly with photos, but still I want things to work. The work around took a lot of work since I had to purge iPhoto of all movie clips and it is a bit clunky to access them seperately from Finder. I was hoping that my bug could be squashed (sigh!)

I can certainly appreciate your frustration! Unfortunately it can be
impossible to resolve an issue which you can't replicate, and so far I
haven't even been able to force it to happen.

I just launched Word 2008 (12.1.1) on my G5 using Tiger (10.4.11) &
navigated through the Objects palette to an Adobe Photoshop folder
containing some .mov files. It was just as successful as I reported having
on my Leopard (10.5.4) MBP. The content of the folder - including the .mov
files - not only appeared in the palette, but also played without any
hesitation when inserted into the document. I also went to another folder
containing .mov files & again no problem at all.

There must be something local to your system/configuration, but I'm at a
total loss as to what it may be... But I have one additional thought;

Do a Get Info on one of the .mov files to make sure it's set to Open With
QuickTime Player. If it's set to open with something else that could be the
problem [just grasping at a straw here].

I'm at a loss too.

Did we already suggest that you test by creating a new user account in
OS X? See if the same thing happens. A dummy folder with a mix of pix
and movies should be enough to test.

Actually, before you do that---log out of your user account, then log
back in but hold down Shift while you hit Log In. This prevents any
background utilities (login items) from running. There could be a
conflict with one of them.

I tried the "log in" suggestion and checked my QT files via "get info". Movie files are opened with QT and the log-in did not change anything. Since OSX works so well, I've never had to mess around with the system/configuration. Evidently, there is something going on that is peculiar to my set up.

Sorry not to be of more help. I'm out of ideas.

This free utility will sit in your menubar and let you browse and insert
photos. It's from a reputable company, and that's easier than constantly
keeping your iPhoto free of movies.
