Obsolete references

I have a number of Word documents that have references to obsolete
templates.
In the Visual Basic window "Tools : References" I try to unselect the
reference to the non-existent template but it won't let me saying it is in
use. I'm not sure how it can be in use when it doesn't exist.

Is there any way to remove these obsolete references.
