Obtaining Word 97 Security Hotfix of September 3, 2003

Microsoft issued security bulletin MS03-035 for a problem
with MS Word 97, which directs me to Knowledge Base
Article 827647. The same holds for security bulletin MS03-
036 / KB article 827656. Rather than this page offering a
link to obtain the hotfix, the link offered tells me I
have to contact Microsoft to obtain the fix, and they want
money. Are they no longer supporting this product, and if
so, is there any way I can get the fixes?

Not quite right. You have to contact Microsoft, but they don't want money.
The hotfix is free, but you do have to place a service call to get it. This
policy is being debated between the MVPs and MS right now, so it's possible
it may change, but don't hold your breath. (BTW, it is almost true that they
are no longer supporting Word 97; there has been an announcement that
support runs out more or less effective upon the release of Office 2003.)
