odbc connection freezes when importing

I admit to barely knowing what I am doing with Access.

I have an odbc connection to a live database on a server far, far away.
About once a week for 3 years I have updated my local Access database via
importing tables over an ODBC connection. Suddenly this has stopped working.


Access imports the first (tiny)table and then hangs. I tried to update my
local mysql database via command line mysql commands and it too, hangs.

I can access the live database via a mysql query browswer no problem.

My business partner has no problem importing the tables into access via odbc
on his pc.

I dont' run norton antivirus.

Any advice on where I should look for the problem?
