Hi Guillaume,

Thanks for posting here!

I understand that you want to block users from using the Excel ODBC
connection option. If I have misunderstood your meaning, please do let me
know.

Based on my experience, in order to keep some users from accessing the
database, we may need to configure the database security/authentication
settings to meet the request.

Here is some information about data source we can access in Excel:

Microsoft Office provides drivers that you can use to retrieve data from
the following data sources:

Microsoft SQL Server OLAP Services
Microsoft Access
dBASE
Microsoft FoxPro
Microsoft Excel
Oracle
Paradox
SQL Server
Text file databases
Third-party providers

You can use ODBC drivers or data source drivers from other manufacturers to
get information from data sources that are not listed here, including other
types of OLAP databases. For information about other drivers, see the
xlreadme.htm file. For information about installing an ODBC driver or data
source driver that is not listed here or in the xlreadme.htm file, check
the documentation for the database, or contact your database vendor.

The Data Connection Wizard also provides access to a data source called a
data retrieval service. A data retrieval service is a Web service installed
on Windows SharePoint Services for connecting to and retrieving data. A
data retrieval service can provide access to the following data sources:
list and document libraries on Windows SharePoint Services

Microsoft SQL Server
Microsoft Business Solutions

I hope the information helps. Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Arnold Gao

You undestand my question properly, thanks.

But i cannot setup security on my DB because i want to
allow users to access it from our ERP Software but i
don't want them to execute custom query via Excel because
it is occupying DBServer CPU and slowing the ERP software.

I just want to make the menu on ODBC connection in excel
to disappear. is that possible?

thanks!

Hi Guillaume,

Thanks for your update!

Based on my research, we are able to meet the request by deleting the
command in the Data menu in Excel. In order to do that, please try the
following steps:

For example, in Excel 2003

1. Click Tools-->Customize

2. Switch to the Commands tab and click the "Rearrange Commands" button.

3. In the "Menu Bar" drop down list select "Data", delete "Import External
Data" or other command if you want.

NOTE: Next time you want to restore the command, you can click the "Reset"
button to do that.

I hope the information helps. Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Arnold Gao
