ODBC Datasource Problems

I set up my ODBC drivers, I am connecting to a FileMAker Database here are
the issues I'm having:
1. It takes a very long time to connect Sometimes after several minutes of
Word not responding it does connect and sometimes I get an error application
message and get kicked out. It asks if I want to send a report.
2. I have tried to connect to a table not in any relationships it still
takes a LONG time, is there anyway to speed it up? Can I specify the fields I
want to pull before I connect to the data source make it faster? How?
3. Can I save a query or automate it so I only have to enter the new field
criteria?

These questions all relate to your database, not to Word.

Thank you for your responce. I can see if the speed issue is related to the
database. But the system errors from Microsoft I think are not from the
database. Even when I get it to connect after word not responding then
responding again, I then end up with error message and kicked out of word.

Also I'm performing the query from the word side, to perform it on the
database side for each use would be very time consuming and not very user
friendly.
