ODBC, Excel2001, and Classic

I'm running Excel 2001 under Classic (9.2.2) on a Mac running OS X
10.2.6. Whenever I try to set up ODBC via the ODBC Setup PPC control
panel, I get nothing. In the User DSN tab I click "add", choose a driver
(Microsoft 3.0.1 FoxProDB PPC, in this particular case), and then click
"Finish". Normally at this point I would get a little setup window where
I could enter "Data Source Name", a description, and a "Server Name".
Now I get nothing.

And if I go into the Pivot Table wizard and try to set up using an
external data source, once I select the source, Excel tries to launch
Microsoft Query and hangs. I have to force-quit Query and Excel to get
out.

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. Or maybe Excel 2001 no longer
supports ODBC Setup PPC control panel? I've searched Microsoft's
Knowledgebase but didn't find anything particularly applicable.

Anybody here have advice on how to proceed?

TIA,

-Doug

Hi Doug,

Check this page for ODBC information. If the answer to your question is not
covered sufficiently please post a follow-up question.

Which page? the mvps.org page? That was completely un-useful; searches
on ODBC and Macintosh reveal nothing of any relevance. I don't know what
"follow-up" I could give... I think I've explained my problem pretty
succinctly. If something isn't clear, ask me a more directed question.

Hi again,

Do you also have Office X installed?

No. I'm only using Office 2001.

HI again,

OK, thanks for the info. I was worried MacOS was trying to launch the
Office X version of MS Query rather than the Office 2001 version. Since you
only have Office 2001 this is not a worry.

It might have something to do with classic. Does everything work OK if you
boot into OS 9 and try?
