odbc link to LotusNotes

When I link data from Lotus to Access via ODBC, Access(2000) defaults all my
fields to Text fields. Therefore dates are recorded as text & more
importantly large text fields are cut off after 255 characters. And I'm
unable to alter the table. Is there a way around this - I really need to
import/link some large text fields.
