ODBC Problem - Please help, I'm going nuts with this!

Sorry, if this is off topic, but I posted to the ODBC group and got
little feedback.

Here's the deal. I've got an Access 2000 format .mdb linking to MSDE
backend via ODBC. Client & server network utilities are set to TCP/IP
only, and everything works great so long as all the clients are on the
same subnet as the server. Anything going across subnets is incredibly
slow? Anybody ever run into this problem?
