Odd behavior of fields

Bill Weylock

This is probably covered in some part of the help files, but I am hoping I
can get a quick briefing here...

What goes on when I accept Word 2004¹s offer to complete a name for me after
I type a few letters?

Seemed like a pleasant enough option, but I found that clients could not see
the names that Word entered. Apparently they are fields designed to update
(presumably) if I change the spelling of the name or something? Why that is
a good idea I do not quite get.

And why they should not display on another computer is totally beyond me.

I am finding it more difficult to predict behavior with this 2004 version
than with any previous.

I learned the other day that if I send out a document that has marked
revisions showing, others will probably not be able to open it except as a
graphic. Apparently that comes from having saved it as ³Final showing
markup² (or something close to that).

Where can I learn how to manage this stuff reliably?

Once upon a time I would have carried the manual around with me for a while
until I had read through the issues. That can¹t happen anymore, and
navigating help entries has become extremely annoying.

It¹s not much easier to find a specific help item than it is to find a
specific command in Customize dialogs.

Thanks very much for whatever you can teach me about this stuff.

Best,

- Bill
