Odd hyperlink problem

On one of my W2K machines URLs are treated in an annoying way by MS
Word. Instead of http://www.ihug.co.nz (coloured and underlined) I see
this: {HYPERLINK " X "}, where X is the URL referred to (no colour or
underlining).
This is a hyperlink (obviously) but to follow it you have to right click
on it and select Hyperlink > Open.
The bizarre thing is that I have the identical Word version on another
machine (MS Word 2000 (9.0.2720)) and it doesn't display this behaviour.
I've asked around at work, but nobody has seen this or knows how to
fix it.

Can someone throw light on this?

You're seeing field codes instead of field results. Press Alt+F9 to
toggle between them. Alternatively, in Tools > Options > View, uncheck
the box labeled Field Codes.
