Odd (probably) border related problem...?

Howdy,

I'll do my best to describe a rather strange problem I am
having with Word 2002:

I have a number of docs which consist of nothing more than a
single picture (usually BMP) inserted in a blank new page
and then saved.

Recently, these have started to print (to an HP Laserjet
1020) with a bold line at the right printable margin of the
page. The line is not at the right margin of the picture.

The line is exactly the height of the picture, but it prints
further to the right than does the picture, that is to say,
it is not the right border of the picture.

If I run a Print Preview, the line does not appear.

If I open the doc, and then click Format | Borders &
Shading, I see that the Borders tab shows None (which is
what I need.)

If on the Border entry diagram, I click to enter a border on
the Left side of the picture, and back out, printing
produces the doc with the Left border I just entered, and
with the line I described having vanished.

If I then remove the Left border, the line on the right side
reappears when I print.

Soooooo, it would certainly seem that the problem is somehow
related to borders, but for now, I can't seem to figure it
out further than that.

Sincere thanks for any help,

You description seems to imply that the problem only recently began to
occur... that things previously worked fine. My guess would be that
you've--knowingly or unknowingly--changed your printer driver, and that
there is a bug in the driver you're using. I would check the date of the
driver and see if it's recent. If so... then see if you can roll back to an
earlier driver and see if the problem goes away.

Hi Herb,

I believe we have lift-off...

(Well, to a degree anyway.)

I looked for a more recent driver than the one I have
installed, and found one on the HP site.

Only after downloading it, did I notice that it was offered
to "correct the problem of a line printing at the right of
the page."

That, of course, seems like very good news, but each time I
try to install it, the process fails.

I will mess with it further to see what the problem might
be, but I strongly suspect that you nailed this one.

Many thanks to all,

That's kind of weird, but I am guessing it could be that track changes is on.
Have you tried that?

Hi Robert,

I checked, but did not have TC on.

See my note to Herb, and accept my sincere thanks,

Hi again Herb,

It seems that I could not get the driver installed as an
update to the old one.

So, instead, I tried to add a new printer using the new
driver.

With that approach, I had success with the installation.

I don't have the printer with me at the moment, but will
know if I have the problem solved tomorrow morning when I am
back in my office.

Thanks to all, once again,

Good luck!

When trying to replace a driver, Windows sometimes insists that the
latest/best one is already installed, and it can be a real pain trying to
convince it otherwise.
