OE express 6 problems after installing office 97

hope this is the correct place to post - i am not too experienced with
computers.
a family member decided to do me a favor while house sitting and installed
ms office 97 on my computer. (previously was just what the computer came with
- windows xp, outlook express 6) when i got home and tried to check my email
ms outlook came up - i told my family member to fix it and he did. after a
few days i was hating the changes that the office 97 made to my document
files and family member said "uninstall the 97" so i did. now when i try to
access outlook express from my internet toolbar (?hope thats the correct
term) the dropdown shows all the normal choices but "read mail" does nothing,
"new message" prompts me to choose profile and gives me a choice of
"microsoft outlook"
from the start menu i can access my outlook express 6 but when it comes up
it has the message "outlook express is not currectly your default mail
client, would you like to make it your deault?" i go throught steps to make
it the default - and the next time i come back it starts all over exactly the
same. family member cannot remember what he did to put oe 6 back on the
toolbar and said put the office 97 back on and i did - still the same
problems AND i hate what it did to my documents!
can someone help me? thanks in advance.

Can you check if you have a restore point before the date the problem(s)
began? If so, uninstall Office 97, then perform the system restore. See

i am very sad to say - my system restore was turned off - any chance of
fixing it without that?

Try removing it in Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs>Add/Remove Windows
Components and then adding it again.

Turn your System Restore function on again.
