Can someone tell me where mail folders are kept in Outlook Express for Mac
Classic - OS9.2?
There are no separate mail folder files (as there were back in OE 4.5). Mail
messages and folders are stored in the combined Messages and Database files
which, in 99.9% of all cases, here:
~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Identities/Main Identity/
(or whatever you might have renamed your main identity to).
If you are actually in OS X, Jaguar or later (OS 10.2, 10.3, 10.4) note that
the Documents folder in question is the Documents folder in your OS X user.
(In Panther and Tiger, that's also the Documents icon in the Sidebar at
lower left column of any Finder window.)
Note that if you are on a computer where you can boot into OS 9, a
_different_ Documents folder is used: the one on the root of your hard disk.
(That was also used by OE in OS 10.1.) So if you boot back and forth between
OS 9 and OS X, you'll see different identities, with all your recent mail
messages missing. The way around this is to remove one of the "Identities"
folder, or the "Main Identity" folder, from one of these locations and
replace it by an alias to the other one. (Hold down Option and Command keys
and drag and drop the folder to the other location.) To merge messages from
both locations into one identity, rename the "Main Identity" folder you're
going to replace in one location to another name (e.g. "Extra"), and also
make an alias of it too to the other location. Then, in OE, go to
File/Switch identities, and switch to "Extra" identity. Drag out all
messages (you can shift-click to select a large list of them, or even cmd-A
to select all in a folder) and also contacts to your desktop, where they
become .eml files (in OS 9 Finder you won't see the extension, but that's
OK), switch back to your Main identity and drag the ,eml (and .vcf contact)
files in to any mail folder.
(In the 0.1% chance that you've been using the same identity of OE for about
6 or 7 years since OE 5.00 (pre-5.02) in OS 8.6 or earlier, you'll find the
Main Identity in use is in the Identities folder within the OE 5 folder
itself. There can hardly be anyone left who still has that setup, and no one
at all in OS X.)
