OE6 --> Outlook 2K Questions

Hey folks,

I'm considering moving from OE6 to Outlook 2K as I've been having some major
problems with OE lately. None of the problems are virus related, but I just
can't deal with OE anymore. I thought I'd check in here to get some
feedback before making the move. Below are some issues I'm hoping to get
info on. First, however, some background...

System: WinXP Pro SP1 (fully patched to just before SP2), AMD XP2400+, 1GB
RAM, 160GB HD (80+GB free & recently defragged), NAV 2K3 run every day

In OE6, I have 20+ subfolders, 6 of which have 2000+ messages. These six
large folders having physical disk sizes of 70mb+. I've tried everything
suggested to clean up OE, (defrag, check/fix registry settings, etc.) and
OE6 still crawls like you wouldn't believe. Folks in the OE6 newsgroups
appear to be stumped on how to help.

Please feel free to point me to any information that might help answer these
questions.

1. Can Outlook 2K handle a large volume of email like I have in OE6 without
choking (multiple subfolders with 2000+ text emails [no attachments])? When
I say 'choking', I mean it takes OE6 several minutes to open, and clicking
on one of the large folders takes another couple of minutes before I can
actually do anything.

Note: I know Outlook 2K has an archive feature that will move older mail to
a seperate PST file, and I would certainly make use of that.

2. If I move to Outlook 2K, can I simply import all my OE6 email directly
into Outlook 2K? Will all the subfolders come over properly, populated with
their respective emails and such?

3. Will I have to recreate all my mail rules manually in Outlook 2K?

4. I love the IDENTITY feature in OE6. I have several email addresses, as
many of us do, and I have an identity setup for each address. This keeps
all the mail seperate, which is a MUST for me. Does Outlook2K have this
feature? If not, how do I go about configuring Outlook 2K to check multiple
accounts?

Thanks in advance for any help you folks can provide. I'm about ready to
try anything to get rid of the frustration I'm having with OE6. While I
don't need all the bells-n-whistles that come with Outlook 2K, I'm willing
to give it a go if it ends the frustration.

It should be able to do this fine. I run Outlook 2000 (C/W mode) on my PC
at work and I have several folders that contain a good deal more than 2000
emails. A Personal STore (.PST) file has a maximum size of about 1.6 GB.

Note: I know Outlook 2K has an archive feature that will move older mail
to
a seperate PST file, and I would certainly make use of that.

2. If I move to Outlook 2K, can I simply import all my OE6 email directly
into Outlook 2K? Will all the subfolders come over properly, populated
with
their respective emails and such?

More or less. I've always had better luck exporting from OE than importing
with Outlook. Note that the transfer process requires both Outlook and OE to
be installed on the same machine regardless of which program is used to
perform the transfer.

3. Will I have to recreate all my mail rules manually in Outlook 2K?

I believe so, H0WEVER, I'm not sure. Perhaps someone else will have better
data on this and chime in.

4. I love the IDENTITY feature in OE6. I have several email addresses,
as
many of us do, and I have an identity setup for each address. This keeps

Yes. In Outlook, they're called "Profiles" and they are completely
separate from one another.

Thanks much, Hal. Your reply was very helpful. I've already taken the
plunge and the transition has been fairly painless thus far. Outlook 2K3
imported all the mail and subfolders from OE6, as well as all the mail
rules. The rules came over mostly intact, though I did have to make a few
tweaks to get them working properly. I couldn't get Outlook 2K3 to import
the OE6 address book (WAB) without first exporting it to CSV, but once I did
that, it imported just fine and the extra step wasn't a big deal.

Initial impressions without archiving anything off is that Outlook 2K3
handles my existing mail volume MUCH better than OE6. It is SO much better
it's difficult to describe. Suffice it to say, I may just be able to keep
what's left of my hair in my head.

Two issues/problems I've come across include...

1. A fairly good number of emails imported over to Outlook 2K3 with blank
("none") as the received date, which is throwing off sorts and such. These
emails exist in OE6 with valid received dates. It's not the end of the
world, but it does pose a problem.

2. I simply cannot get archiving to work at all. I've gone into
TOOLS|OPTIONS|OTHER and set AutoArchive to 14 days and enabled prompt
before, leaving "delete" disabled. I set the default archive file to an
"archive.pst" file I manually created. I have also gone to each and every
subfolder and set individual AutoArchive prefs for 3 months and pointed it
to the proper "archive.pst" file.

I then went into FILE|ARCHIVE and tried archiving on both of the options...

- archive all folders according to their AutoArchive settings
- archive this folder and all subfolders, specifying a date of three months
ago (Personal Folders selected)

No matter which I choose, NOTHING gets archived off to the "archive.pst"
file. When trying the second option above, I've even enabled "include items
with do not autoarchive checked", and it still didn't work.

I have TONS of stuff older than three months that should be getting archived
off, but it's just not working. It seems to be going through the process...
I see "archiving" and messages at the bottom right as it goes through the
folders, but nothing gets archived off (it goes REALLY fast through all the
folders). I've tried running the archive process with the "archive.pst"
file opened and closed, with no difference.

Actually, I just noticed something. One folder was created in the
"archive.pst" file and it does contain eight items, the newest one dated
10/31/2002. Problem is, that folder in the "live" file has items much newer
than that, yet still older than three months which should have been moved to
the appropriate archive folder.

I'm really confused by this issue. In a past life I used Outlook 2K3 at
work in an Exchange environment and I don't recall ever having a problem
archiving stuff off. I'd really appreciate any help you folks can provide
in figuring this out. Thanks!!!

Import and Export will always lose the received dates.

Archiving is based on the modified date, which having done this today, will
change date on most items to today's date. Wait a few weeks and try again
(opening an item will change the modified date so beware when you want to
archive an item/folder.)

Thanks for your reply, Milly.

While you say that importing and exporting will always lose the received
dates, this doesn't seem to be the case with my situation. Only a small
fraction of emails lost their received dates. Regardless, this is something
I can live with at this point.

Thanks for the info on archiving. Is there any way I can view the modified
date of an email in Outlook 2K3? I've checked a few headers but couldn't
find it.

I'm a little concerned about this archiving issue on the modified date as
there won't be any way to automatically archive items three months old in
the current store as everything has the same modified date. In the future
this will take care of itself, but what can I do for the current store right
away? Can or should I simply open up the archive PST and manually move
stuff over? This seems to have added a whole new level of confusion for me.

If I wait three months and then run an archive, all of the current store
will get moved over, but I don't want to have to wait until then. If I have
to I will, but I'd rather not.

Adding to Milly's response, try exporting messages from OE instead of
importing with Outlook, I've always found it does a better job with dates
and the like.

Two issues/problems I've come across include...

1. A fairly good number of emails imported over to Outlook 2K3 with blank
("none") as the received date, which is throwing off sorts and such. These
emails exist in OE6 with valid received dates. It's not the end of the
world, but it does pose a problem.

2. I simply cannot get archiving to work at all. I've gone into
TOOLS|OPTIONS|OTHER and set AutoArchive to 14 days and enabled prompt
before, leaving "delete" disabled. I set the default archive file to an
"archive.pst" file I manually created. I have also gone to each and every
subfolder and set individual AutoArchive prefs for 3 months and pointed it
to the proper "archive.pst" file.

I then went into FILE|ARCHIVE and tried archiving on both of the options...

- archive all folders according to their AutoArchive settings
- archive this folder and all subfolders, specifying a date of three months
ago (Personal Folders selected)

No matter which I choose, NOTHING gets archived off to the "archive.pst"
file. When trying the second option above, I've even enabled "include items
with do not autoarchive checked", and it still didn't work.

I have TONS of stuff older than three months that should be getting archived
off, but it's just not working. It seems to be going through the process...
I see "archiving" and messages at the bottom right as it goes through the
folders, but nothing gets archived off (it goes REALLY fast through all the
folders). I've tried running the archive process with the "archive.pst"
file opened and closed, with no difference.

Actually, I just noticed something. One folder was created in the
"archive.pst" file and it does contain eight items, the newest one dated
10/31/2002. Problem is, that folder in the "live" file has items much newer
than that, yet still older than three months which should have been moved to
the appropriate archive folder.

I'm really confused by this issue. In a past life I used Outlook 2K3 at
work in an Exchange environment and I don't recall ever having a problem
archiving stuff off. I'd really appreciate any help you folks can provide
in figuring this out. Thanks!!!

Hey folks,

I'm considering moving from OE6 to Outlook 2K as I've been having some
major
problems with OE lately. None of the problems are virus related, but I
just
can't deal with OE anymore. I thought I'd check in here to get some
feedback before making the move. Below are some issues I'm hoping to get
info on. First, however, some background...

System: WinXP Pro SP1 (fully patched to just before SP2), AMD XP2400+,
1GB
RAM, 160GB HD (80+GB free & recently defragged), NAV 2K3 run every day

In OE6, I have 20+ subfolders, 6 of which have 2000+ messages. These six
large folders having physical disk sizes of 70mb+. I've tried everything
suggested to clean up OE, (defrag, check/fix registry settings, etc.) and
OE6 still crawls like you wouldn't believe. Folks in the OE6 newsgroups
appear to be stumped on how to help.

Please feel free to point me to any information that might help answer
these
questions.

1. Can Outlook 2K handle a large volume of email like I have in OE6
without
choking (multiple subfolders with 2000+ text emails [no attachments])?
When
I say 'choking', I mean it takes OE6 several minutes to open, and clicking
on one of the large folders takes another couple of minutes before I can
actually do anything.

It should be able to do this fine. I run Outlook 2000 (C/W mode) on my PC
at work and I have several folders that contain a good deal more than 2000
emails. A Personal STore (.PST) file has a maximum size of about 1.6 GB.

Note: I know Outlook 2K has an archive feature that will move older mail
to
a seperate PST file, and I would certainly make use of that.

2. If I move to Outlook 2K, can I simply import all my OE6 email directly
into Outlook 2K? Will all the subfolders come over properly, populated
with
their respective emails and such?

More or less. I've always had better luck exporting from OE than importing
with Outlook. Note that the transfer process requires both Outlook and

OE

to
be installed on the same machine regardless of which program is used to
perform the transfer.


I believe so, H0WEVER, I'm not sure. Perhaps someone else will have better
data on this and chime in.


Yes. In Outlook, they're called "Profiles" and they are completely
separate from one another.
