Off Topic: Anyone here use word and DreamWeaver has a question

P

Phillip Jones

I need someone one versed in Word/Dreamweaver to contact me.

I am working on a Bylaws Table of Contents started by another person and
I have finished to a Point.

I want to click on a given TOC item and it would automatically go to
that heading area in the document. Just in case we have created Named
Anchors at the start of each heading.

I'm thinking there is supposed to be a way to use the named anchor
somewhere in in the link to make it go to a given point. Or highlight
that point.

Would like one on one suggestion:

View what I am working on at:

http:/vpea.org/Bylaws/test/bylaws_toc.htm.

What we are trying to do is make it easy for people click on TOC items
and easily go to that item to research.

Hi Phillip,

Somewhat versed in DW, and I'd like to help, but your question isn't making
sense.....

I looked at your test webpage. What you have is a TOC page and the content
in separate files--each article is its own webpage. So people can already
easily go to only the bylaw they are interested in.

Named anchors would only apply if the TOC and the content were all on the
*same* webpage (that is, all in the same file). Here's an example--scroll
down a bit to see the contents:
http://daiya.mvps.org/bookwordnoframes.htm

Click on one of the content links and you see a URL in the address bar like:
http://daiya.mvps.org/bookwordnoframes.htm#NavigatingYourDoc

NavigatingYourDoc is the named anchor--the # is the part of the link that
signifies "go to this named anchor within this URL". You can create links to
a certain part of the doc just by typing the #AnchorName at the end of the
regular URL. But this doesn't apply when each article of the bylaws already
*has* an individual URL.

A Word doc would be like the second example--the TOC and content are all in
the same file. But for the situation you currently have, named anchors do
not apply.

I was afraid of that. I was going by what was sent.

I'll have to convert the whole document as one HTM document and try again

As sone as I get it setup I'll repost.

Try the following:
http:/vpea.org/Bylaws/test2/bylaws_toc.htm

In the test document he did he was having problems getting each item
come to the top. I found That I must add enough Returns to make more
than one page of blank space. I ran into this with XVII-XVII. I had to
particular with spelling TITLE in named anchors they are sensitive to
capitalization.

Having it all in one page doesn't make it any easier to find stuff, just by
the way, since you said that was your original intent. It does make it
easier to browse the entire thing, or to print it and read it on paper.
People on dialup can load it once, instead of multiple times. Your call
whether such conveniences are worth the trouble of reconstituting the doc.

When you have it all in a single file, then the TOC text would be a link
that consists of "#AnchorName". No need to include the URL unless you the
link is located on a different page. E.g., example from my page
before--this is the source code for one of the Contents entries:

<li><a href="#HowWordThinks">How Word Thinks</a></li>

I believe you can create a TOC in a Word doc, paste the entire thing into
DW, and have a functioning TOC on your webpage, but I'm not a fan of the
resulting spaces in the anchor names.
