Hello,

I'm having an issue with an IE explorer message and don't think I'll get any
help from the IE groups. They don't seem to be too active and I haven't
gotten a response, so I am hoping someone here can help me.

I am suddenly getting this message when I open and do anything at all on
Windows Live Hotmail.

The current Web page is trying to open a site in your Trusted

sites list. Do you want to allow this?

Current site: http://bylO7w.baylO7.mail.live.com

Trusted site: about:blank


This comes up in groups of 7 whenever I open hotmail, click a link or mouse
over messages. I didn't change anything in my system settings. It's really
annoying and hope someone knows how to suppress this message.

Hi mark,

I'm no expert, but I ran into something very similar - something trying to
open my about:blank. Turns out it was a Trojan Hijacker. I ran SpyBot in safe
mode and it picked out the Trojan, removed it and after reboot, I was fine.

I'm sure other real anti-spyware can detect it as well as SpyBot
(www.safer-networking.org/) it's free without any strings, and Tenebrils
free Lite version of Spycatcher (http://www.tenebril.com/) Neither of these
are he lying false positives that plague the Internet. Both are free and
qworth teh try. I helped with the development of SpyCatcher, but prefer
SpyBot myself :)

Thank you, I'll try that. I wonder why Anti-Virus doesn't pick that stuff
up?

After checking my internet options I discovered that About Blank was in the
restricted sites. I removed it and that resolved it. How it got there I
don't know, but I'll just write it off as another "Microsoft Experience". ;)

About: Blank is the default internet page. If you view the source, the HTML
should read:

<HTML></HTML>

If there is anything else on it your page has been replaced by something
which is probably evil.

Arvin,

Maybe I'm not following you. I am using IE 7. The default page when I open
a new tab is Default: Tabs. It has content.

I have notice, lately, Defaut: Blank in the title bars when I have clicked
links for product info from a couple of websites. The pages wouldn't open,
but I just thought it was in IE 7 issue. Do you know where I would find the
html page for default: Blank on my computer?

I meant where is the html file located. Since it doesn't come up in my
browser, I want to open it with an editor to see its contents.

If IE7 has a toolbar, click View >> Source to view the source code for the
page. If there is no page, blank or otherwise, then what html exactly do
you wish to see?

I don't know. I'm reacting to what Arvin said on his first post:

"If there is anything else on it your page has been replaced by something
which is probably evil."

Some how Default: Blank got listed as a Trusted site and a Restricted site.
Today when I previewed a page from Visual Web Developer, I got a warnign
from Spybot about an attempted registry change. So something is going on.

If you view the source as described it should be as above. However, it
could be that a blank page shows something other than the HTML tags as the
source. As I understand, that is what Arvin was suggesting you check. I
was just explaining how to go about checking.
However, it does sound as if something else may be going on, depending on
what is trying to change the registry.

Mark, Bruce has it right. You should be able to view the source in every
version of IE. There is no code on the default blank page beyond the HTML
tags. If you see anything else at all you do not have the original and
something else has replace it. In no case should it require a registry
change. My suggestion is that you deny the registry change and immediately
run a full anti-virus check, as well as the Spybot check.

I don't think there is a problem with any of the pages in IE. Somehow
Default: Blank got entered as a Trusted site once and another time as a
Restricted site. It hasn't happened since and I'm not too concerned. As
long as I can work I don't care. The messages popping up were annoying. It
just reminded me of the Outllook Security messages. For all I know this
could be another Microsoft Security measure to make sure I don't reading my
email in peace. ;)
