off97 file associations in XP sp1 generate message box

K

Kevin

I have installed Office 97 on XP Home Edition sp1 with
all of the latest patches. When I go into an Office app
(Word, for example) and use File/Open to open a file, the
application behaves exactly as expected.

However, when I click on an Office file (hello.doc, for
example) the approproate application opens the file and
then displays a messagebox with the text "C:\...\My
Documents\hello.doc is being used by Kevin. Do you want
to make a copy?"

It doesn't matter whether I click OK or Cancel, the
messagebox disappears and I can proceed as normal, but
it's an irritation. How can I fix this?

Thanks in advance
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

You need to recreate the file associations. Go to Start/Run and run
the following commands:

winword /r
excel /regserver
powerpnt /regserver
msaccess /regserver

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.
