Officde 97 Upgrade - forward compatability of qualifying products

G

Grr

Help,
I recently bought a new computer and today I was planning
to install Excel 97 user. I bought an upgrade version
some years ago as I my old computer came with MS Works -
one of the qualifying products.

My new computer came with Works 7, so in principle I am
eligible to reinstall the upgrade, but Excel 97 does not
recognise the newer softwares. Indeed, according to
Knowledge base Article - 158069

"Note Some of the qualifying products listed above may
not be recognized by the Microsoft Office 97 Setup
program. Also, newer versions of the programs listed
above, such as suites, word processors, and spreadsheet
programs, are also qualifying products, even though they
are not listed above.

But of course Excel 97 is no longer serviced by tech
support, so I WOULD REALY APPRECAITE HELP ON THIS AS I'D
HATE TO SPEND 200 BUCKS ON A NEW COPY OF A PROGRAM I DO
NOT USE THAT MUCH. HELP!

Your principle is incorrect, a new version of works is not a qualifying
product.
If you still have yr origonal Works qualifying disk, insert it and point to
it, when installing yr upgrade Excell.
A qualifying product is also part of the licence for the upgrade product.
You could of course switch to one of the open source Office apps, available
eg on Amazon.

Grr again

....but the upgrade conditions specifically state that

"Microsoft Works (all versions for Windows)"

so I cannot really see why I could boy use the new one as
qualifiyng product since all are covered?

Actually it meant all version of MS Works that existed at
the time Office 97 was created and sold. Office 97 does not
know how to recognize a version that did not exist at that point.

During the time Office 97 still had active phone-in technical support
available from MS you were able to obtain a different installation
key to use in an upgrade scenario from Microsoft.
