These 52F failures for any MS Office 2007 Security or MS Outlook Email Filter
updates have been haunting me since May of this year. They would fail all
install attempts and generate a Code 52F. When you click help its displays
"WindowsUpdate_0000052F WindowsUpdate_dt000".
After countless attempts using any and all suggestions from various sources
including MS and also including suggested remedies covering MS Office 2003
listool.exe references. I finally came up with a workaround, but it seems to
be a scenario that Microsoft should patch.
In my case the 52F code was associated with error code 80070643 derived from
the c:\windows\windowsupdate.log file. Another reference was the Handler 1
code 1327 which points to the invalid drive I:\. My MS Office 07 was
originally installed using the DVD drive ID E:. And so with the hint of the
problem I went up several troubleshooting paths investigating the Event
Viewer and various log files such as the MSI*.log files.
At first I thought it was Dell's pre-installed MS Office 07 preview setup
and figured somehow the Office DVD install was corrupted with the Dell setup.
I wanted to avoid uninstalling and reinstalling, so tried repairing without
success.
With the hint of the I:\ reference, I had a network drive setup using the
I:\ drive as as share point for Internet Explorer 7 Favorites. I use it with
the MS Sync feature to effectively share 1 master IE7 favorites. So as a
experiment, I changed it to the local default.
It worked, all MS Office Security/Outlook updates installed. Why do the
Office updates using Windows Updater need to have IE7 favorites on a local
hard drive? My shared drive reference I:\ has plenty of disk space and was
always active during the Windows update process. Looking at the log files,
it seems to look at IE Favorites for space or something. I know other people
had this problem and re-installing MS Office 07 would not of worked for me.
Oh well, I will switch the IE 7 favorites drive designation back and forth
for future Office updates via Windows Updater.
