Office 08 - Excel

R

RobertHayler

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I was using Office 04 before I bought my new machine in September. I installed Office 08 on the new machine and soon noticed differences in Excel.

1) I don't create workbooks using VBA, but I have received several over the past year and would like to know why it was cut out of 08

2) Most people that I have to send workbooks to are not able to open .xlsx

3) When copying sheets from one book to another, 08 often times out for a while. 04 didn't do that.

4) 08 has crashed when copying sheets from one book to another - very inconvenient

Not being a computer guy, I thought upgrading to 08 was a natural move for the new machine. Now I'm not sure why I should keep it.....

installed Office 08 on the new machine and soon noticed differences in Excel.

1) I don't create workbooks using VBA, but I have received several over the
past year and would like to know why it was cut out of 08

Bottom line it was a matter of time, money & manpower. There were a lot of
other considerations as well but VBA was slated for exclusion from Windows
Office 2007 as well. The plan was reversed at the last minute & it was
simply too late to restore it to Mac Office. Actually, the exclusion of VBA
in Mac Office 2008 was formally announced nearly a year prior to its
release. However, it is also official stated that VBA will return [as I
understand it, with a vengeance] in the next release.
2) Most people that I have to send workbooks to are not able to open .xlsx

That's simply because they haven't bothered to install the *free* OXML
Converters and/or keep their versions updated. Any version of Mac Office v.X
or later & any version of Win Office 2000 or later should be able to read
the files with no problem. Of course, Office 2008 can use the old binary
file format rather than OXML but certain features - primarily
graphics-related - aren't supported.
3) When copying sheets from one book to another, 08 often times out for a
while. 04 didn't do that.

Sounds like you may not have Office fully updated. The current update level
is 12.2.3, so if you aren't there run Help> Check for Updates to get
current.
4) 08 has crashed when copying sheets from one book to another - very
inconvenient

Same as #3. Also, run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions and make sure
OS X is fully updated as well. If you continue to have the problem post a
new message & include specifics & details about the files, the type of
content & the methods involved.

That's not my call :) and if you need VBA you have no choice but to
reinstall Office 2004 or run a Windows version via Boot Camp or an emulator.
Just know that an older version of Mac Office can be installed side-by-side
with Office 2008 -- it isn't an either-or proposition.

Bob - I should have been more specific about #2. The people who are
having problems opening my workbooks are using Windows PC. Is the Open
XML converter for Mac Office 04 users or is there a version for Windows
PC or are they the same?

Hi Robert,

Windows users with any version of Microsoft Office 2003 and later
(assuming they have installed Office updates any time during the past
year or so) can open and work on .xlsx files.

That said, it sounds like your Windows users are either using pre 2003
software, or have not updated. But that's not a problem. Just use File >
Save As and in the Format pop-up menu choose 97-2004 Workbook .xls to
save the workbook in the older format. You might also click the
Compatibility Report button while you're in the Save As dialog to see if
there are any compatibility problems that might be encountered along the
way.

When you open a workbook that is .xls format in Excel 2008 you may
notice that the title will say Compatibility Mode, and that some Excel
2008 features are disabled while working in Compatibility Mode. This
ensures that your workbook will stay compatible with earlier versions of
Excel even though your version can do more if you save in .xlsx format.
