Office 2000 and Internet or Workgroup mode

I have 2 PC's connected with wired Ethernet. PC1 has Office XP Professional
so I use Outlook 2002 for email, while PC2 has Office 2000 standard and used
Outlook 2000 for email. Currently the PC2 (Outlook 2000) is installed in
Internet only mode. I do not use an echange server. I am running Windows
XP Professional on PC1 and Windows XP Home on PC2.

I just reinstalled Windows on both PC's. Is there any reason for me to
switch PC2 to Corporate Workgroup mode. I was going to do so because of the
Ethernet connection between the 2 PC's, but since I do not use Exchange, I
did not think I would benefit in any way from this.

Should I change to Corp Workgroup mode on PC2 since I have the PC's
connected with wired Ethernet? Will changing the mode provide any benefits
or will it cause problems since I am not running Exchange. I do have
multiple uses setup on both PC's and I use ICS on PC1 to share a dial up
internet connection with PC2.

I have an older scanner that I will load on PC1 (the Office XP Computer).
One of the requirements is that the computer must support MAPI Messaging I
guess because it installs an upload folder. This is built into Office XP,
and I am installing the scanner on that PC, I should be OK. Will this
create any problems or incompatibilities with my Ethernet connection if I do
not have Office 2000 running in Corp Workgroup mode?

Also posted a question under Messenger group but since this affects Outlook
I am sure you probably know the answer.

I use a POP3 account from local ISP for email. It is not an MSN email
account. I have not signed into Windows Messenger (SP2 ver) yet. Do I use
my local ISP email account to sign in to Messenger or do I setup my Hotmail
account, load MSN Messenger, and then sign in with my Hotmail account and
register my POP3 as an alternate email? It is my understanding that my POP3
account will not work with Messenger because it is not an MSN or Hotmail
account?

Also, do I leave the box checked under Messenger Options in Outlook XP or do
I uncheck it. I do not have a paid Hotmail account so It is my
understanding that Outlook will not support Hotmail anymore unless I pay for
the account. I just wondered if by leaving the box checked it would cause
incompatibilities because I don't have a paid Hotmail account?

If you mail accounts are Internet mail protocols, you'll be happier with
IMO and gain no advantages from Corp/Workgroup. For information on

Having an Ethernet connection will have no impact on your mode. No mode or
version of Outlook permits sharing of data unless you run against Exchange
Server, so whether you have IMO or C/W is of no consequence. The only MAPI
feature you will miss with IMO is the ability to use the Outlook Address
Book. IMO substitutes the Windows Address Book. 95% of users don't even know
or notice the difference.

Hotmail support in Outlook is disappearing. It is my understanding that you
can register any email address you want with Windows Messaging when you set
up your profile, but you should confirm that in a WM group. Whether you
check the option to integrate with WM is entirely up to you. Only Outlook
2002 and 2003 support it.
