Office 2000 applications quit running - cannot uninstall

On a Windows XP machine, all of the Office 2000
applications quit working and displayed: PROBLEM WITH
SHORTCUT Error performing inpage operation. When I tried
to uninstall Office 2000, it would not let me and
displayed this message: INSTALLER TERMINATED PREMATURELY
The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a
thread exit or an application request. It also will not
let me install over Office 2000. I scanned the computer
for viruses and none showed up and all of the latest
Windows patches are installed. Does anyone know how to
fix this?
