Office 2000 back as default (instead of Office 2007 trial)

How can I change back Office 2000 Excel (and Word etc) as default program for
Excel files. My computer somehow accidentally changed to Office 2007, and now
when I try to open Office documents(from File manager), it's using Office
2007 and starts asking for product key.

I've had this computer about 1,5 years now, and all the time I've been using
Office 2000 programs with no problems. It was only couple of days ago I think
I opened some document from Internet and when doing that it tried to use
Windows installer(maybe it was in some format that's only in Excel/Office
2007??). It either loaded trial version for Office 2007, or most likely there
already was one pre-installed. After that I have experienced this problem.

Office 2000 program files seem to be OK. If I start Excel(or Word) from the
icon they work perfectly OK. The only problem is when I click Excel-files
from File manager, the computer opens Office 2007 Excel and starts asking for
product key. (and same for Word also)

I could deal with having to open documents with File/Open-function. The
worse part is that I'm using a program created with Matlab that uses
Excel-files as input and output files. Input works OK, but with output I'm
again asked for that product key, and the program crashes when I'm not giving
it.

I don't think there's any need to uninstall Office 2007 (or is there?), or
reinstall Office 2000 (because it's actually working OK). Just if I would
know how to change back default to Office 2000. (I'm using Windows Vista).
When I tried to see how to set default program for xls-files(for example),
there was only Excel, but no mention which version, or alternatives for
differnt versions.

I would be very thankful if someone could help me with this problem.

I would remove the Office 2007 trial if you're not going to use it. That
should take care of it.

If not, and given that Office "upgrades" (even unintentional ones) aren't
always graceful when you have multiple versions of Office, I'd also
re-install Office 2000 to ensure that there's nothing that was over-written.

You can try reregistering the file associations, but I'd suggest a repair
installation. Both techniques are described here:

If you installed the 2007 trial uninstall it, you may have to repair the
2000 installation from the cd

2007 uses a diferent format for doc & excell files
There is a free ms compatibility pack download on ms site that enables this
format files to be viewed
