office 2000 clip gallery

Hello all,

Using Windows 2000 professional and Microsoft Office 2000 professional. I
have had the need lately to use the clip art feature in Publisher and Word.
Each time I click on insert clip art, the program freezes awhile and then
gives me the message that states the following: Cannot start Microsoft Clip
Gallery. Please run Office 2000 to install this feature. At which time I
do. It tells me it has installed successfully, but it makes no difference
it just keeps giving me the error when I try to use the feature. I have
done the following:

KB823760

While trying method one I found that I do not have the file named
Artgal50.mmc.

Double clicking on the file named Argalry.exe does nothing. I can see it
running in the processes, but nothing happens.

I have also downloaded a new Mcps.dll file from this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/252793

I have uninstalled entirely and installed office all to no avail. Does
anyone have any ideas how I can get this running so I can use this feature?

Thanks,

Gale

The Artgal50.mmc is in a hidden folder similar to this:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Catalog

Hi Mary,

I checked my folder view, it is set so I can see hidden files and folders.
I do not have the folder named Media Catalog. If it is hidden, how can I
make it seen so I can rename Artgal50.mmc?

Thanks,

Gale

Hi Mary,

I have now finished article ID 240742 with no changes. I tried all three
methods. I still get the same results. A message that states the
following:

Cannot start Microsoft clip gallery. Please run office 2000 setup to
install this feature.

Mary,

Yes, I have done both of these to no avail. I completely uninstalled and
gone into the registry and deleted all the registry items as it stated in
the articles. re-installed and tried it again. Nothing.

I do not have artgal50.mmc. I logged into the machine with another account
that also has administrative privileges to see if it was a profile problem.
Nope, didn't work.

I put the cd in and tried to run artgalry.exe and cag.exe from the cd.
Nope, didn't work. When I tried to cag.exe from the cd, it stated that it
could not link to artgalry.exe and was it installed properly? When I double
click on argalry.exe, it just sits there. I waited for an hour to see if it
was just taking a long time. Nothing happened. I can see artgalry.exe in
the processes, but nothing happens.

Do I need to uninstall Office 2000 completely and clean the registry and
start from scratch? I would hate to do that as the updates take forever to
download.

Can you find the artgal50.mmc on the setup disk?
Did you download the mcps.exe utility

Hi Mary,

I uninstalled clipart gallery and reinstalled, again. This time I now have
artgal50.mmc, but still get the message to reinstall.

Yes, I updated mcps.exe utility, no changes.

I have tried 252793, no changes.

I have also tried 232310, no changes.

I cannot figure out how to use the update below, every time I double click
on it, it gives me the following message:

The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service
because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may
update a differerent version of the program. Verify that the program to be
upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade
patch.

This is getting quite irritating. It works well on all machines except
mine. I do not use Microsoft PhotoDraw Clipart Photo Gallery.

Does it cost $245 for technical support for this sort of thing or is it
free?

I spent 6 hours on the phone with Microsoft support today. They cannot
figure out what is wrong with my machine. They stated it is printer
drivers, so I uninstalled all the printers and re-installed and made sure
all the drivers were the latest. Then I uninstalled my scanner and left it
uninstalled, it still didn't work. So I uninstalled all the Microsoft
products and cleaned the registry and re-installed them. Still doesn't
work. It works when I log in in safe mode, but doesn't work otherwise, no
matter what profile I use to log into the machine with.

Any body else have any ideas?

Thanks

Hi all,

While waiting on the phone with Microsoft, I figured out what my problem
was. It was a program I have on my machine called SpamCatcher. I turned
the program off and can now use my clip gallery.

Thanks for all your suggestions Mary.
