It sounds like you have an entry set for the Alternate startup file
location. If you can get Excel to open, choose Tools/Options/General from
the menu and clear any path that appears in the "Alternate startup file
location" textbox. Restart Excel and the problem should go away. Excel
automatically tries to open every file located in the this path.
If you quickly hold down the Shift key after double-clicking the Excel
icon it will prevent Excel from opening all these files so you can make this
change. If you can't get this to work you will have to edit the registry,
which I would only advise as a last resort, so post back if this first
suggestion doesn't solve the problem for you.
