Office 2000 freezing when trying to open documents due to Adobe Acrobat

I can't run Adobe Acrobat 6.0 and Office 2000 concurrently
because any Office application I try to open by clicking
on the file freezes. When I remove Adobe Acrobat 6.0,
this solves the problem. What's the fix for being able to
use both? I seem to remember that it involved editing
some registry files with Acrobat 5.0, but couldn't find
any help files on this issue either on the Microsoft or
Adobe websites. Many Thanks.
