Office 2000 install on W98 msiint problem

I have IBM Thinkpad240 running W98 and whe I try to install office 2000 (or
office XP) I get the following error message

error creating process C\windows\tempIXP000\msiint.exe..... Reason %1 is not
a valid win32 application

I have looked in the knowledge based, tried to install mssint manually,
downloaded the W98 version from the internet, but I cannot get past this
problem

Please help
