I have Office 2000 and am trying to run it in Windows 7 64 bit environment.
I know my way around Office 2000 and do not wish to move to the newer
versions.
I am aware of problems with Outlook 2000 in Windows 7 and am not using
Outlook.
Excel seems to run fine. Word is my only issue and it seems to be a
nightmare.
Word opens/hangs without toolbars and must be killed in task manager. This
seems to be a common complaint expressed by many...which encouraged me that I
would find a solution. I am an optimist, you see...
winword /a opens word fine. I have looked for the normal.dot and it does
not exist.
I have unhidden the files in folder options. ...I have verified I am seeing
hidden files. I know that the home of normal.dot in 7 is...
C:\Users\myprofile\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates
When I check inside word for tools/options/file locations...they all seem
correct except for file type "Tools" has a path that looks corrupt or like
before we could use longer file names; C:\Program~2\Micros~1\Office... I
cannot correct this by trying to modify the location. (I don't really know
if this is an issue, but it's the only file location that appears this way;
perhaps because it is the longest file name.)
I have read extensively here and in Technet for possible issues.
When I first tried to install Office 2000 on this machine, Office 12 trial
version was
on the machine, but not activated/installed...just there. I thought perhaps
the install of 2000 somehow got confused by this...as if it could think, eh?
Thusly, I uninstalled all office versions; trials, etc and cleared the
registry entries.
My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\X.X\Word
X.X will be as follows, depending on your version of Word:
Word 2000 is 9.0
Word 2002/XP is 10.0
Word 2003 is 11.0
etc --------------
I reinstalled Office 2000, SR-1a and SR-3. Didn't change the outcome.
Still word hangs and must be killed in task manager.
I had also read of possible corruption of the data key...
Clearing corrupt registry values...delete this key...
\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\Data
I deleted the key, rebooted, opened word with the same result...hangs word.
The data key was re-generated, as expected.
I have re-registered word ...winword /r
---------------------------
I apologize for the lengthy post, but I wanted to indicate all that I have
tried.
For whatever reason, the normal.dot does not get generated. I'm sure this
is an issue that someone has discovered and found the solution. And, I hope
I get to meet you soon. ?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
