Office 2000 on W2K reinstallation issues

T

Ted Byers

My system was attacked by a hacker last week, and whoever it was managed to
corrupt my registry tot he point I invariably got the blue screen of death
every time I tried to start.

I reinstalled W2K, wiping the C: partition, applied all updates for it, and
then installed Norton Internet Security along with al updates for it to scan
the entire system and verify there is nothing left on my system that could
cause trouble.

Under the impression that if I installed my software as the machine's
administrator, the software would be usable regardless of which user ID I
used (I have, at this point, set up an account as a power user, which I'll
use whenever I am just using the computer as opposed to administering it -
and later, when all is working correctly, I'll set up a second for my
sister; this is in addition to accounts created by W2K and Visual Studio), I
installed Visual Studio 6 and Office 2000 while logged on as the
administrator. I installed Visual Studio first, and when I checked when
logged on as a mere mortal, all worked correctly. So, apparently having
confirmed my impression, I logged back on as the administrator and installed
Office 2000. That appeared to go well, annd so I went to the microsoft
website and ensured that all updates for Office have been applied. Now,
however, when I log on as a mere mortal, things are not great.

When I start any Office component, such as Word or Outlook, I see the
Windows installer starting again, claiming it is configuring Office 2000
SR-1 Professional, and almost immediately after that, an error box appears
with error 1706, saying "No valid source could be found for product
Microsoft Office SR-1 Professional. The Windows installer cannot continue."
I have to click OK on this dialog, and then cancel on the first, and then
the pair appear a second time, and I respond the same way, and the
application then starts and appears to behave normally. This is annoying
since, if I start any of the Office applications while logged on as the
administrator, they all start normally.

There is a second annoyance, though, which is that in Outlook | Tools |
Accounts, there is nothing related to news groups, and so anything I do with
newsgroups I'm doing at present using outlook express.

One final question. A while ago, I had moved my email and newsgroups data
from the C: partition to a different drive. How do I now tell Outlook
Express to use the files and directories I was using before the attack? And
how do I tell Outlook to use the Outlook data and directories I was using
before the attack? And, can this be done without losing the email I have
received since getting my system back up and while testing my access to the
net? If this can be done, I will not have lost my email or newsgroup data
because of the attack, but I will have lost the favourites data in Internet
Explorer because I hadn't found out how to be able to store that data on a
different drive.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ted
