On my Compaq laptop, I have a 1.6 gig processor, 1 gig mem, & 60 gig HD. I
have XP Home, Office 2000, & Photoshop 9.0.
I recently installed Visual Studio 2002 so I could work on applications with
C# code at home. I discovered after the install that when I pull up an
office document (WORD or EXCEL) and try to set margins or Page Preview, the
Office app shows as Not Responding. Trying to open a jpg photo in Photoshop
takes 10-20 times longer.
I also discovered by accident that this only happens when I am connected to
the internet. If not, things seem to run just fine. I've uninstalled and
reinstalled AOL, Office 2000, and Visual studio with no change in what is
happening. I've run SPYBOT S & D, Adaware SE, Norton Antivirus, and MS Virus
check and nothing shows up as virus or spyware that might have an affect.
Task Manager shows less than 5% activity when the Office and Photoshop apps
go into Not Responding condition.
I strongly believe that the Visual Studio 2002 install caused the problem.
Even techs at a local Desktop Support service are baffeled. I'm getting a
little tired of unplugging my LAN cable just so I can work with my Office or
Photoshop docs.
