Office 2000 Premium SP3 update can't find data1.msi file

J

Jack Hidley

I have Office 2000 Premium running under Win 2000 Pro. I have installed SP1
and SP2 updates for it. SP3 will not install. After the installation starts,
the installation program says that it is looking for a file called data1.msi.
I direct the software to the root directory of THE original Office 2000
Premium disc #1 to find the file, which is there. I get an error saying that
data1.msi is not a valid installation package for Office 2000 Premium SR1.

I have searched my entire computer for the data1.msi file. There is no such
file on it. I have run detect and repair from Excel. No change. I have
uninstalled Office and reinstalled it. No change. I have read through
numerous knowledge base articles and tried their suggestions. No change.

I have attempted to contact anyone at Microsoft, but apparently this isn't
possible without paying them $35. When the software license says No warranty,
they really mean it.

Anyone have any ideas?

TaurArian,

I have gone over that page already. That is where I got the idea to Detect
and Repair the Office installation. Nothing on that page solves the problem.
I can't find the data1.msi file on the computer. I have uninstalled and
reinstalled Office and then immediately tried the SP3 update. It can't find
data1.msi. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled Office and then
immediately tried to find data1.msi. No luck.

My hard drive is partioned into C and F with all programs installed on F. C
has a copy of DOS installed under a dual boot setting. data1.msi isn't on the
C partition though. This is the only relevant thing I can see from that
assistance page.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Jack Hidley

TaurArian,

Yes I tried the automatic installation of SP3 from the Office Update site
and I'll tried it manually by downloading O2kSp3.exe and running it. I get
exactly the same problem in both cases.

When you uninstalled and reinstalled office, there may have been some residue
registry entries left over.
Perhaps this time, use the Windows Installer Utility to clean out office registry
entries and then reinstall office to the same folder.

Hi Jack,

For Office 2000, each MS Office product family reused the same name for the primary .MSI (MS Installer) file, "Data1.MSI", but
although named the same they were different versions. When you are asked for the Data1.MSI file, at the bottom of that dialog in
the 'Use Feature from' box it should say what product CD it's looking for. That name needs to be a match for the CD you are
offering.

The Data1.msi file would be on the CD rather than on your computer unless you copy the CD to the PC then install from there rather
than from the CD itself.
