Office 2000 Pro install on Dell laptop-opening Word locks up computer

I've installed Office 2000 Pro (Academic version) on a
Dell Inspirion laptop with 128 MB memory running Win98SE.
All Office programs run with the exception of Word. When
I access Word via start, programs or from the Office Tool
bar the end result is that Word locks up and the only way
to get out is to shut the computer down.

If I do control-alt-del I get the message that computer
resources are low, but this is without other programs
running in the background. Repeated ctrl-alt-del only has
the effect of disabeling the whole computer, and then I'm
forced to shut it off anyway...even to the point of
pulling the battery.

Another odd thing is that the Word splash page has an OEM
ID number, and the Office that is installed is not OEM.
The Dell came pre-installed with MSWorks, and Word will
work via Works, but not by itself or thru Office. MSWorks
Word will not work unless Office is installed.

Could there be a conflict with the pre-installed Works and
the full version of Office 2000 Pro. Any solutions will
be greatly apprecitated. Dell will not offer any support
because the laptop is three years old.

Thanks

It seems likely that you have a conflict with Works Word and Office2k Word,
the versions may be different.
You should iether have uninstalled Works prior to Office2K install or used
the custom install of Office2K ensuring that you installed into a different
Folder than Works

Thanks for that info. I will check that out to see if
they are both installed in the same folder. Would be nice
to find an easy fix.

MSWorks was pre-installed and I cannot find the disc to
remove it. You know how it is with all the major computer
manufacturers and their pre-install stuff. I find it to
be a real pain.
