I have encountered a rather interesting problem trying to
use Office 2000 on Windows XP Pro. I have setup Group
Policies to install and manage a new install of Office 2k
Standard and Pro on to brand new computers.
So far, 12 computers have be put under gp management for
Office 2k standard. These machines are running perfectly.
3 are under gp managment for Office 2k Pro. Office Pro is
not running as it should be on these computers. When a
standard user tries to open Word the "Preparing to
Install" begins normally. Half way through the install, a
dialog is displayed indicating the the user has
insufficient rights to access a folder. The folder it is
looking for is "C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\templates\Design Templates 97" This folder does
not even exist!.
Once I create this folder and allow standard users modify
rights to the entire Program Files\Microsoft Office
folder, the install runs through completely. Well, sort
of anyway. Once I get to this point, I have to tell the
install to ignore the fact that the user has insufficient
right to modify registry keys, about 40 of them.
Has anyone every seen this before? This is worse than all
of the manual modifications to get Office97 to work on
Windows2000!
Some other items regarding the network:
1. Both the admin installations for Office 2000 Standard
and Pro are located on the same server (under different
folders of course).
2. The problem did not occur for the first person to use
2 of the computers. One of the individuals turned on her
Windows2000 computer which had Office97 installed; even
through I instructed her not to. Her machine picked up
the gp to install Office 2000, and enable roaming
profiles. Her new WinXP machine never started Office2000
correctly. Coincidentally, the other 2 machines running
Office Pro started having problems for others than the
first people to use the computer.
I cannot find anything on microsoft's site regarding this
problem.
