Office 2000 Pro Re-install

I am running Office 2000 Professional under Windows XP and recently
encountered a problem. Occassionaly, during start-up, the system
automatically launches the Windows Installer app and trying to re-install
Office 2000. This basically wipes out the desktop and Outlook Express
settings. I have to then restore the Express databases, etc.
I've tried un-installing Office 2000 and re-installing but it hasn't
corrected the problem.
The problem seems to occur mostly on every start-up, although it does not
happen at every start-up.
Any ideas out there?
