Office 2000 problems after hard drive upgrade...

R

Rick Mora, Jr.

Hi all,

I recently upgraded my computer to a faster, higher capacity hard drive. I
made the new drive bootable and then copied all the files from the old drive
to the new drive. I'm keeping the old drive in place to serve as a backup
storage device (it is now the d: drive). So far, no difficulties.

My problem is this: Now every time I open an Office document of any kind,
Windows Installer pops up and informs me that the feature I am trying to use
is on an unavailable resource. It wants to know the location of the
installation package 511167.MAINSP3op.msp. I've searched both hard drives
and also the original installation disks and that file (or folder) is
nowhere to be found. It can't be that important because clicking the
"cancel" button brings up the Office document as if there were no problems,
and I can go about my merry business. However, the same problem occurs when
trying to use the "Detect and Repair" feature. Also, Windows now uses the
generic "unknown file type" icon for Office documents instead of the correct
Office document icon, even though the files are associated with the correct
applications.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems and been able to resolve them?

I'm thinking about trying the Windows Install Cleanup Utility and then
re-installing the Office Suite.

Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rick

My software environment:
Windows XP Home Edition
Office 2000 Professional SR-1

The cause depends on how you went about copying to the new drive.
If you simply copied 'all files' to the new drive you may have future
problems, or did you use the utility provided with your new hd?

You could use the Cleanup utility to remove all refferences to Office, then
repair/reinstall, however depending how you did the migrated to the new
drive you may have further problems.

I used the copy utility (Data Lifeguard Tools) that was provided with the
new hard drive (Western Digital).

Are there any issues I should look out for when using the Cleanup Utility?

Thanks,
Rick

You need to reinstall programs, not use some sort of copying utility. And
you need to use that cleanup tool carefully. Even Microsoft recommends using
it as a last ditch effort.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll post back after I've completed the
operation. Hopefully, I'll have good news to report.
