Office 2000: Product Compliance Check - Setup failed

Had Office 2000 running on a PC with Windows XP service pack two. Bought new
laptop with Windows XP and added sevice pack two THEN tried to install Office
2000 from original Microsoft CDs After putting in product key got these
error messages:

Product Compliance Check

Setup failed to locate a valid qualifying product on your machine.
Please select the drive where a qualifying product can be found.

options: C or D

D just fails.

C gets this:

Installer Information

Error 1608. Could not find any previously installed compliant products on
the machine for installing this product. OK

Microsoft Office 2000 Installation: Fatal Error

Installation ended prematurely because of an error. OK.

Dopey me. I called Microsoft and the techie suggested that I check the CD
for Office2000. Sure enough, it said that it was an upgrade. When prompted,
I inserted the CD for Office97 and it worked OK. Thanks.
