Office 2000 (Professional)

When I attempt to open Outlook to check or write e-mails I get the error
message "Microsoft Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close ..."
and I am therefore unable to use Outlook.
I have done a repair using the Office 2000 CD-Rom and it sucessfully makes
the necessary repair and I am able to open Outlook one time. Once I close it
and attempt to reopen I receive the same error message.
I can repeat this scenario on any number of occasions but can not seem to
overcome the problem.

Are you using a PST? Verify the size (since there's a limit in that older
version of Outlook) and if necessary, compact it. You might even want to run
a repair against the PST using scanpst.exe.

Kathleen,
Even thou I am not familiar with scanpst.exe I removed the bulk of my saved
and deleted messages and I can now access my Outlook e-mail (consistently). I
would appreciate more information related to the PST you alluded to but even
if I don't understand this particular item you have helped me "immensely" ...
Thanks
