Office 2000 Question

mike

My Microsoft Office Word 2000 defaults to 2 columns when I
open a new Word document, but I want the default to be 1
column. Can anyone tell me how to set the default to 1
column? I haven't been able to find anywhere to do this.

Thanks, and best wishes!

Setting the column option to 1 should do the trick.
Don't forget to apply your changes

Hi Mike,

You need to locate Normal.dot, open it, and modify the Column format.

Note you need to go to Format/Columns and select "One" in the presets
in order to properly modify the column format. Do not use the Columns
command on the toolbar or change the number of columns using the
spinner buttons in the Columns dialog box.

There is a minor bug in Word 97 - Word 2002 which will not set the
column width to automatically adjust when you change your page margins
or paper orientation. What you need to verify is in the Columns
dialog, "Equal column width" is turned on. Note this option is
disabled when you have a single column selected and only clicking
"One" in the presets will turn the option on.

If you prefer to reset your Normal.dot to the defaults then locate
Normal.dot and rename it to OldNormal.dot. Word will create a new one
upon starting.

Any customizations can be copied to the new Normal.dot via the
Organizer (Tools/Templates and Add-Ins) Once this is complete
OldNormal.dot can be discarded.
