office 2000 reinstall problems

My computer crashed, so I reinstalled Windows 98 SE.

Somehow, my Office 2000 professional edition got deleted
too, so I tried to reinstall it using original CD-ROMS.

But I keep getting this weird message:

"The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows
Installer service because the program to be upgraded may
be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different
version of the program. Verify that the program to be
upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the
correct upgrade patch."

I don't know what to do, I've tried everything. What does
this message mean anyway?

Dear Henry.....I too am having EXACTLY the same
problems.........I had to resort to installing my old
office '97 PGM! I can't get Office 2000 premium to work.
I'm getting the same error message as you! Help! anyone??
