Office 2000 SB -2 Word Programs

I have a new computer XP Home and it came with Word 2002
preinstalled (Works). I had Office 2000 Small Business
which I installed not knowing at the time it would
eliminate/deactivate? Word 2002. I assumed it would keep
the newest version. I am receiving update notices for
both. Also when I load up Word it does display Word 2000
at start up. At times Word responds slow, loading and
unloading some documents or at start up and closing the
program.
I suspect there may be a conflict of sorts between the
two Word programs although I can't find Word 2002 on my
program menu. Can you give me some advice, should I
uninstall one of these programs or both and reinstall?
I'm not sure what I should check for or how.
I would classify myself as an intermediate computer user
(probably know enough to be dangerous)so please make your
recommendations in laymans terms.
Thanks for any help.

Hi, PW,

You can have two versions of Office (except Outlook) at the same time,
though Microsoft doesn't recommend it. The installation isn't smart enough
in this situation to automatically keep the latest version; if you told it
to install Word 2000, it installed Word 2000. I'd recommend that you think
about using custom installation options in the future so that you have more
control over what's happening on your computer, especially if you know
enough to be dangerous <grin>.

Do you want both versions of Word, or not? If not, uninstall the one you
don't want using the Windows Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs applet ,
and re-install the one you want. If you do want both, make sure they're
installed in separate directories. If I were you, I'd make sure that I had
a copy of the Works with Word CD from the original equipment manufacturer
before starting, in case you need to restore anything from there.

Thank you Susan,
I appreciate the info. No I do not want two versions of
Word. For me I can't think of any advantage to having
both. I do have the original Works disc that came with
the computer. So you are saying use the uninstall on the
Add Remove program.. should I uninstall both then
reinstall with the one I do want Word 2002. Curiously
when I look at the Add Remove screen I have an option for
Word 2002 and it is only listed as .01MB, then I have
Microsoft Works 2003 and then my Office 2000 SB, so I
don't have the Word 2000 as a separate choice. In the
back of my pea size brain I seem to remember that
uninstalling one of the components of Office is a utility
that can be used on the original disc. I have not looked
into that yet.
Appreciate your help,
PW

Yes, you can do that. There are a couple of ways to go with this, but
here's the one I recommend:

Uninstall Office 2000.
Re-install Works and Word 2002 to restore your system to how it was
pre-installed. Make sure everything runs fine.
Reinstall Office 2000 and choose a custom install to exclude Word and to
specify a different directory than where Word 2002 is (choose to create one
called c:\program files\office2000, or something).

That should work for you. Keep in mind that if you want to do tasks that
require integration of the Office applications, you may run into problems
because the Word version is later and is disconnected from the rest of the
suite.

Hope that helps--
