Office 2000 setup failure in Win XP Home "Internal Error 2755"

Hi

I am trying to install Office 2000 in Win XP Home
Edition, but have met with an internal error 2755 during
installation. I read up the support article from
Microsoft but don't quite understand what I should do.
Please enlighten me. Thx

Hi Susan,

That's exactly the article I had read, follwing the Resolution, I can find
the Installer folder but I can't set whichever permission it is suggesting.
I'm using Win XP Home edition, and I seems to find anywhere that could allow
me to set the permissions.

Can you right-click it and choose "Sharing and Security..."? Then go to the
"Security" tab and set the permissions as suggested in the artcle.

Does that work?

Hi Susan,

I did as you suggested but there is no security tab available at all, only
sharing tab.

Okay; didn't know that (I don't run XP Home). Did you have a previous
version of Office installed and are you upgrading? Did your previous
version come pre-installed?

If so, can you try to uninstall the previous version of Office before
installing Office 2000?

Did you obtain the copy of Office 2000 from a retail channel?

Hi Susan,

This is a new PC without previous office installed. I managed to find the
permissions setting which is only available in safe mode for XP Home.

But unfortunately, even setting the permissions as suggested does not help,
the same error 2755 still occurs. I tried reading log file for windows
installer and a sentence before the error 2755 says something like unable to
extract the file data.msi. Any clues?

Thanks; didn't know that about safe mode. One thing you might try is to
copy the CD to your hard drive and run setup from there. See if you get the
same error.

If so...

Are you logged in as the administrator of the machine when you're
installing?

Here's another undocumented thing to try. Got this from a posting at
freelists.org, credited to a poster named Shelley Turk:

"Right click 'My Computer', click 'Manage', double click 'Services', look
down the list for "Windows Installer", right click and choose "start" then
run the install."

Anything there?

Hi Susan,

Tried copying the setup files to the hard drive and still the same error,
even with the undocumented procedure. I beginning to believe that I'm the
only unlucky one on this planet to keep failing installation of O2K on XP
Home. sigh...

Anymore suggestions?

I actually have these thoughts, setting of security permissions for XP Home
is done in safe mode, but when boot to normal, does these settings still
valid? Cos WP Home only have Sharing Tab in Normal mode.

Hm. I don't know. Perhaps you could ask the question in one of the XP
newsgroups? I'll search around a bit, too.

Hey, Rick,

Here's an article that shows you how to set permissions in XP Home:

308418 - HOW TO: Set, View, Change, or Remove File and Folder Permissions in
Windows XP:
https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308418#7

I'm guessing this is what you had found, which shows you how to do it in
Safe Mode. I don't imagine that it would revert back upon using the normal
boot mode; otherwise, what the point? You can determine this probably by
going back into Safe Mode and seeing if your change of permissions still
applies.

Are you logged into the machine as administrator when doing the
installation?

Also...have you disabled Simple File Sharing? Might be worth a try--

How to Disable Simple File Sharing
1.. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
2.. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
3.. In the Advanced Settings section, clear the Use simple file sharing
(Recommended) check box.
4.. Click OK.

Hi Susan,

Yes, I'm log on as Administrator. BTW, checked and confirm that XP Home
cannot disable Simple File Sharing, only available in XP Pro. Anyway, I
found a reg patch to enable the security Tab to be shown in normal mode for
XP Home provided by one of the MVP for XP. ried all ways and means mentioned
Good news is that I managed to get the installation successful after more
than 50 times. I can't imagine I had that kind of patience. haha..

Here's what I did.

After the 2755 error for office setup occurs, I run the Windows Installer
Clean Up program. When it warn to say that there was a suspended
installation of Office, it ask whether to undo the changes, select NO. Do a
clean boot with only Window Installer selected. Then go to Add/Remove
Program and select CHANGE for Office 2000. Only then will a Office setup
windows start prompting to Repair, Add/Update or Remove, select add/update
and just add components as necessary then click Update Now. This
installation will be successful then and System will propmt that Office has
been successfully installed. The same procedure goes for installing SR1.

I'm now trying to update to SP3, hope that things will be fine this time.

Wow! Great news. Yes, that's a lot of patience...and thanks for posting
back.

Did you get this info from the Windows XP MVP?
