Office 2000 slow to open files

G

Myc omputer has suddenly started to slow down when doing
doing some tasks:
when I double click on an Excel or Word file to open, it
can take 45 - 69 seconds to open. When I first open the
aplication and use the "Open" command to open the same
files, they open immediatelly. I have reloaded Office,
defragged, checked for viruses and spy-bots and find no
problems.

When I shutdown the computer, the shutdown sequence is
interrupted by a message box indicating a program is not
keeping up and should click on the Wait, End Now, etc.
The probelm program is not identified on the message box.

HELP!

This sounds like a general computer problem, not necessarily connected to
Office. I currently have a computer that exhibits this behavior but it is 6
years old and running on fumes right now. Sluggish to open programs,
documents, times out frequently, and other annoyances. Even putting Linux
on it did not help (less of a footprint some folks say) so I am almost
exactly sure that either the hard drive is failing (clicking sounds on
occasion) or another component is at the end of its lifecycle.

You might want to try a group for the hardware or the Operating System to
see if there are problems being reported there. You can also do a search on
Google Groups to see if someone has reported a similar problem in the past
and has received an answer.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After searching google.groups.com and finding no answer,
(e-mail address removed) asked:

Is this slowness caused by the anti-virus software?

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
