Office 2000 underline spacing problem

Urgent help needed with the underlines being smashed into the font. I remember having this problem in 95, it improved in Office 97, now having same problem in 2000 and files converted to 2000. Anyone know of a solution. Trying to do a financial for someone and can't fix this problem HELP!
