Office 2000 upgrade problem

Last week I checked for updates from Microsoft and found an update for Office
2000, so I downloaded it. As it started to install, it told me that I needed
to insert the Office 2000 disk. Well, I have no idea where the disk is so I
cancelled the install process. But now I am unable to use Excel because
everytime I start the program or try to open an Excel document, it starts the
Install procedure and asks me to insert the disk. The other Office programs
still work. HELP! Any ideas?

Hi;

Obviously, your first priority should be to try to find your Office 2000
CD-ROM.

A small possibility exists that you can undo the attempted install.
Check your Add&Remove programs listing in Control Panel to see if that
update is listed there. If so, try clicking/Remove for that item.

Check the StartUp group in your Start menu and if you see anything there
related to this update then delete it. If your system has the MSConfig
utility, run that (type "msconfig" on the Start/Run line) and check the
StartUp tab for anthing related to the update you downloaded.

Open MS Word, then check the Help/About information. If the serial
number/Product ID doesn't contain "OEM" then you may qualify for a
replacement CD from MS. See this website for ordering information:

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the reply, but apparently I'm screwed. There's nothing on the
add/remove list or the start menu. My software is not OEM, so I called the
number you gave. But they said they can't get me a new disk because they no
longer have disks for Office 2000. They directed me to a tech for help, and
after about an hour on the phone he concluded nothing could be done. He said
that when I went to do the download and all that fine print came up about
agreement to terms of use, somewhere in that fine print it said I needed the
disk. It seems to me that they would have an obligation to make something as
important as that a bit more prominent than buried in the Terms of Use. The
bottom line is that I'm screwed.

Hi;

Sorry to hear that. Unfortuately there's nothing I can do either. The
only small consolation is that as an owner of Office 2000 you get a good
deal on buying an upgrade version to Office 2003. I know that isn't
much news to cheer you at this point. Again, I'm sorry I couldn't help
to solve this problem for you.

Having been there, done that, I can only recommend that everyone keep
their original program CD's (or floppies, etc.) in a safe place.

Hi Tom,

Thanks. Actually, someone from Microsoft called me later and they will be
sending me an updated version of Office. I was pretty down on Microsoft
after my call to the Tech, but after the call from Customer Service (I
think), I have new respect for them. They took care of the problem and
that's all you can ask. Thanks again.

Mike
